Hopes that mug will become 'cup of plenty' for York Minster Fund

Fundraisers at York Minster are hoping that a combination of art and ceramics will help raise money to support the maintenance of the medieval cathedral, as a new limited edition mug goes on sale for the first time.

The mug, which is decorated with images of York Minster and other city landmarks, was created by esteemed artist Matthew Rice, managing director of Emma Bridgewater Limited, who has also completed designs for organisations as diverse as Canterbury Cathedral and Private Eye magazine.

The design was commissioned by James Fenwick for York Minster.  “We’ve stocked Emma Bridgewater items in our stores for some time, and they have always been very popular, so I spoke to Matthew Rice about creating one of their signature ‘spongeware’ designs for York Minster taking inspiration from a wren in the Zouche Chapel,” he explains.  “The original design was just too intricate for spongeware, which works best for more abstract images, so they kindly developed a lithograph finish with a conceptual design of York Minster surrounded by other major landmarks in the city.”

The mug is exclusively available from the York Minster Fund office, priced at £20 (plus £4 post and packaging).  Only 1000 mugs will be produced, making this a collectors’ item from the first day of its issue.  All funds raised from the sales will support the on-going restoration and conservation of stained glass and stone within York Minster.

Mugs can be purchased from Church House on Ogleforth, York, during normal office hours, at the two York Minster Christmas Concerts on 5 & 6 December, or by mail order.  To order a mug, please send a cheque made payable to The York Minster Fund to:
