Secure Self-Service for Media

The Red Tag system from 3M Libraries

Diversified technology company, 3M, has introduced a new low cost security system for media on disc, including CD, DVD and Blu-ray. The 3M Red Tag media security system works with RFID technology to offer the highest level of protection against loss.

The Red Tag system incorporates a small, red plastic strip (or tag) that is inserted into a specially designed case, which allows staff or customers to remove the security tag without damaging the case or the disc inside. The item is issued using existing RFID self-service equipment. Once issued, the tag can then be removed in two ways: either by a manual unit that unlocks the tag, allowing a member of staff to remove it or by using the new 3M Automatic Detagging unit.

The simple-to-use 3M Automatic Detagging unit was developed by 3M to allow libraries to offer customers full unattended self-issue of media disks without the need for staff intervention. The system uses two aspects to the security: an RFID tag is attached to the case or the disc, which controls the issuing of each item and a Red Tag secures the case. When the case is inserted into the 3M Automatic Detagging unit, it checks the status of the RFID tag to confirm whether the item has been issued and only then will the Red Tag be removed, ensuring that only issued items can be unlocked. Holding the item in place within the 3M Automatic Detagging unit for a short period of time, the indicator shows when the item is issued and de-tagged.

Chris Millican, Marketing Manager at 3M Track and Trace Division, comments: “3M is pleased to offer a security system that allows libraries and retail outlets to ensure the security of CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays for the benefit of both customers and libraries by removing the need for staff participation in the issuing process. The combination of RFID technology and the Red Tag system creates a simple but very effective form of security tagging that is easy for the customer to use. The key benefit of the Red Tag system is effective, low cost security, allowing the media to be put on display in its case, with no outer case required. It provides a simple and secure removal process that can be applied to many existing cases that already have the Red Tag slot available.”

As shops and libraries become more reliant on self-service it is important that staff can be confident that the security systems work as efficiently as possible.
