Sir Patrick Moore: an inspiration
Most of us, somewhere in our past, can trace a lifelong interest in a subject back to an inspirational individual – somebody that first sowed a seed of interest, and then helped us nurture it so that it became a fundamental part of our life, as a career choice, hobby or passion.
For me, Sir Patrick Moore was one such person. I never met him, and knew little about him outside of his media profile. Yet, that was sufficient to inspire in me an interest and passion for astronomy and space exploration. My interest started with Sir Patrick’s coverage of the first lunar landings, and was then stimulated by his writing and by many years of watching him present The Sky at Night; it remains with me to this day.
I won’t be alone. Through his many TV appearances and interviews Sir Patrick will have influenced a generation of amateur and professional scientists and astronomers, as well as all those in the wider public whose interest in science or technology peaks whenever there is a space mission or major celestial event.
With his passion, knowledge and enthusiasm, his major contribution to science – for example, NASA used his lunar maps for planning the lunar landings – and his unique style of communication, Sir Patrick Moore was an inspiration to us all.
