The sun shone down on delegates and exhibitors at the region’s first event aimed specifically at women in the South West looking for inspiration and guidance in the business world. Unsuited and Unbooted took place on Friday 21 May 2010 and was attended by over 150 women who enjoyed a day of workshops, activities like archery and clay pigeon shooting and motivational seminars from Saira Khan, star of the first BBC Apprentice series. Women attending came from all over the South West as well as from Somerset where the event had the ideal venue at The Monks Yard, Horton Cross, near Ilminster. There was even a dray ride that transported delegates to the outdoor activities. Pupils from Wadham and Preston Young Chamber picked up tips from many of the exhibitors and spent time talking to Saira Khan who is launching a new programme on the BBC that will teach children about business. Unsuited and Unbooted was organised by five enterprising women, all of whom have thriving businesses in the South West. It was sponsored by leading solicitors Porter Dodson and Business Link South West. Guest speaker Saira Khan said, “Events like Unsuited and Unbooted provide a fantastic opportunity for women to get together and really learn from each other’s business experiences. Women’s approach to business is very different from men’s and it was amazing to see how good the women in the South West are at networking and supporting each other.” Organisers of the event were Carly Warren, Thoroughbred Print; Rachel Sweet from SweetSkills; Jane Adkins from A Head for PR; Jacqui Yeoell from West Country Galleries and Rebecca Holling from The Monks Yard.
