NEW ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION FROM VOLVO TRUCKS It will now be easier for vehicle owners and transport purchasers to assess the environmental impact of different truck models. Volvo Trucks is now introducing an environmental product declaration for its heavy-duty Volvo FH and Volvo FM truck models. It describes the environmental impact of these vehicles from the production of raw materials to recycling. The Volvo Trucks' website on the Internet, www.volvo.com/trucks, contains general data and offers users the opportunity to make their own calculations of this environmental impact, based on their specific operations. This environmental product declaration is a natural step in Volvo's strategy of presenting the environmental impact of all its operations in an open, factual manner. It has been developed to assist customers, transport purchasers and the authorities in their increasingly detailed discussions relating to the environmental impact of transport. The unique feature when it comes to this declaration is that the environmental impact of the entire product life cycle is presented - from material production, including sourced components, transport, production and complete service life. It goes without saying that the use phase is the dominant factor in terms of the total environmental impact trucks exert, accounting as it does for as much as 95%, according to the evaluation tool known as EPS (Environmental Priority Strategies in product development). The fuel consumption of trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles varies sharply, depending on equipment, load and driving conditions. This environmental product declaration is based on the user entering his own consumption figures, after which the system calculates the environmental impact in the form of emission values, total climate effect (GWP) and pollution potential. This interactive calculation system on the Internet is supplemented by a calculation example and a short brochure, both of which can be printed out.
