The EU's new directive for commercial vehicles exhaust emission limits

THE EU'S NEW DIRECTIVE FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLES' EXHAUST EMISSION LIMITS WAS TODAY APPROVED BY THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT The European Parliament voted today in plenum for a decision concerning the EU's future exhaust emission directive for commercial vehicles. By this decision, the European Parliament follows the Environmental Ministers' proposal, which was intended to come into force in March 2000. By the same date, it will be possible to certify engines according to the Euro 3 emission level. - It is very satisfying that the European Parliament today has made this decision. A consequence is that the Euro 3 emission level can be introduced without delay, declares Mr. Karl-Erling Trogen, President & CEO of Volvo Truck Corporation.- Technically, we are well prepared for Euro 3, and with the outcome of this decision, we can now launch our Euro 3 engine programme, continues Mr. Trogen. The decision states that the Euro 3 emission level will be mandatory when certifying new commercial engines from October 1, 2000, the Euro 4 level from 2005, and the Euro 5 level from 2008. The Euro 3 level will be mandatory when registering new commercial vehicles from October 1 2001. The directive also comprises vehicles driven by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), as well as new and more representative emission test methods.
