VOLVO GLOBAL TRUCKS deliveries, january- AUGUST 2001 Volvo Global Trucks deliveries up to and including August amounted to 100 134 units, compared with 117 470 pro forma last year, a decrease of 15%. Compared to the same period last year, order intake decreased by 11%. Order intake in North America decreased by 30% and by 5% in Europe. "We are still seeing no signs of improvement on the North American market. At this stage it is too early to foresee how the market will be affected by the tragic events of last week, but we have no doubt that it will increase uncertainty for our industry," says Tryggve Sthen, President of Volvo Global Trucks. "Certain markets in Southern Europe are still strong, but on the whole we can see that demand in Europe is diminishing." During the period January-August 2001, deliveries from Mack Trucks, Inc. amounted to 16 482 units, which was 32% lower than during the same period last year. Heavy-duty deliveries totaled 15 876, and medium-duty totaled 606 (vs. 833 in 2000). Amid the persistent weakness in North America, Mack's market share continues to run well ahead of last year. Through August, Mack's share of the U.S. heavy-duty retail market was 14.%, two full percentage points higher than at the same time last year. Renault V.I. does not operate on the North American market, and has consequently not been as affected by the downturn there. Total deliveries for the period January-August 2001 totalled 40 176 vehicles, an increase of over 1% compared to the same period last year. Heavy-duty trucks amounted to 20 327 units, of which the Kerax range continued its stong performance, with an increase of over 18%. The medium-duty Midlum range increased by 12% and the light truck ranges Master and Mascott totalled 12 092 units, an increase of over 3%. Deliveries in France remain at a good level, with an increase of almost 3%. Deliveries to other markets, in particular the Northern African markets, also increased by 25%. The North American market for heavy trucks is still in a very serious state, with low prices for used vehicles and weak demand for new ones. The industry is plagued by poor profitability, and several dealers have gone out of business. Volvo Trucks' profitability is under pressure due to the situation there. In Europe, demand is expected to continue decreasing, and the very tough competition continues. An unexpectedly strong demand in southern Europe compensates the total downturn to some extent. The markets in Eastern Europe and Asia are developing well, whilst the downturn in South America is becoming more pronounced.
