Volvo IT is expanding in China and a national competition among IT students helped attract top-talent university students. Three of them will now join the mission as Volvo IT crew members at the next Volvo Ocean race stop in Sanya, China. They will soon show if they have what it takes to work with IT at the extreme.

As the official IT supplier to the Volvo Ocean Race, Volvo IT is on a mission to deliver a world-class IT platform for one of the world’s most extreme sporting competitions. The three winning Chinese IT students, that come from different parts of China, will get the opportunity to help implement , monitor, and support the IT infrastructure for the Volvo Ocean Race in Sanya. This includes helping to ensure live broadcast and the transmission of data when the sailing boats will race in the harbor area of Sanya on February 18th, 2012.

“Volvo IT in China delivers IT solutions to the Volvo Group and is expanding at a rapid speed in Asia. We have a big need to find and attract talented IT experts. During 2011, the number of employees grew by more than 100%, and we expect another 60% growth during 2012” says Anders Dalmén, Manager at Volvo IT in China. “I believe there are many capable IT-students in China. We want to find those that communicate in English and enjoy working in global teams.”

The competitors submitted a creative story through text, pictures, or video, by using Weibo, a Chinese social media similar to Twitter or Facebook. The stories were judged by a panel of experts based on creativity, passion, and related IT experience. Ten candidates were invited for an interview and out of that the three winners were selected.

The winning students were: Ma Li from Tianjin University, Wei Ni Jun from Nanjing University of Technology and Liu Yuan Wei from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

“The Volvo Ocean Race stop in China will be a cultural melting pot that I’m sure the winning students will find very inspiring”, concludes Anders Dalmén.

Facts Volvo Ocean Race:

The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the world’s most demanding global sporting competitions.  During the nine months of the race, the teams sail over 39,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas. The sailing crews experience life at the extreme: food onboard is freeze dried, temperatures vary from -5 to +40 degrees Celsius and they only take one change of clothes. They trust their lives to the boat and experience hunger and sleep deprivation.

The Volvo Ocean Race started in the Spanish port of Alicante in the autumn of 2011 and will finish in Galway, Ireland during the summer of 2012.

The course include stopovers in Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajai (Brazil), Miami (USA), Lisbon (Portugal) and Lorient (France).
