Volvo Trucks transfers assembly from Scotland to Belgium and Sweden

VOLVO TRUCKS TRANSFERS ASSEMBLY FROM SCOTLAND TO BELGIUM AND SWEDEN Volvo's truck assembly operations in Irvine in Scotland will be transferred to the company's plants in Belgium and Sweden as of 1 July 2000. The introduction of Volvo's new FM family - which features considerable component standardisation with the rest of the company's product range - and a process of dedicated production rationalisation have freed capacity at the Volvo Truck Corporation's assembly plants. This permits the relocation of production facilities from Scotland to the larger plants in Ghent and Göteborg in order to achieve rationalisation gains. This decision is part of the Volvo Truck Corporation's advertised structural rationalisation programme and it is in line with the transfer, announced in 1998, of bus assembly operations from Irvine to Sweden and Poland, scheduled for July 2000. The closure of truck and bus assembly operations in Irvine affects 450 employees, about half of whom work with truck production.
