Zurich, Switzerland, November 28, 2017 – ABB Ability™ based digital technologies enable the wind sector to maximize renewable penetration, efficiency and reliability

ABB is showcasing some of its leading-edge technologies at the WindEurope event being held in Amsterdam from November 28-30, 2017. Exhibits includes digital solutions from the ABB Ability™ portfolio, offering a unified, full-spectrum approach from individual devices to fully integrated solutions and services. Technologies extend well beyond wind turbines, including maintenance, control systems, analytics and grid connections that can be deployed by developers and operators to maximize penetration and use of wind energy, ensure stability and reliability, improve system performance and optimize decision-making.

“Our ABB Ability™ based digital technologies for wind power applications leverage the industrial internet of things (IIoT) to maximize efficiency and reliability of power supplies” said Alfredo Parres, from ABB’s Power Grids division, who is responsible for renewable energies. “Our exhibits at this event also provide insights to wind power developers and operators on how new digital and analytics-based technologies can provide them with vital real-time inputs to make informed operational decisions making them more competitive and improving business performance.”

ABB will present its industry-leading expertise in wind turbine design and integration and offers a range of technologies that come together to reduce the Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE) from wind farms, such as WindSTAR special transformer, drive train, pitch and yaw systems as well as other auxiliary systems.

From the control of individual wind turbines to advanced diagnostics that prevent unplanned downtime , ABB Ability based digital solutions enable utility providers and wind operators to know more, do more, do better, together. ABB’s digital portfolio includes a range of real-time network control, asset management, portfolio planning and distributed energy resource management solutions. ABB will also demonstrate its Enterprise Software solutions that enable increased asset utilization and productivity while reducing operating costs and cloud based solutions providing market intelligence and analytics to support investment decisions.

ABB will also display pioneering technologies designed to set new industry standards in efficiency and safety including digital electrical drivetrain solutions that enable real-time asset monitoring and data analysis of the generator, converter and transformer. These solutions help increase turbine uptime and reduce costs, enabling optimized energy production and power quality with flexible and reliable grid interconnection.

As a global leader with an unparalleled installed base, ABB’s portfolio for grid connection and transmission solutions includes real-time, intelligent monitoring and automation control solutions for substation equipment as well as innovative energy-storage systems to maximize penetration of renewable energy sources. HVDC Light® transmission for applications like offshore wind and interconnectors that help integrate and optimize the use of renewable energy sources to bring clean power to millions of people will also be showcased at the event along with the ABB Ability™-based MACH control and protection system, which acts as the brain of the transmission system.

Other significant new technologies on display are the ground-breaking TXpert™ - the world’s first digital distribution transformer; the new TXtreme™ distribution transformer designed for the harshest of environments as well as ABB’s new EcoFlex pre-engineered eHouse solutions designed to fast-track projects and SafeWind, the slimmest secondary medium-voltage (MV) SafeRing/SafePlus switchgear on the market, able to fit easily within a tower.

WindEurope 2017 will be held at the RAI Conference and Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam. ABB is exhibiting on stand 1D80. For more information about technologies on display, visit our event page.
