Swedish wireless broadband operator ATENIT has signed a deal with UAB Nelté in Lithuania, to deploy an access network for wireless and mobile broadband coverage in Lithuania. The network will be the first wireless broadband network in the Baltic Sea region besides the network currently deployed by Atenit in Sweden. Nelté is granted the nationwide license in Lithuania to deploy and operate wireless access networks in the 3,5 GHz frequency range.

The network will be based on the UMTS TDD standard with technology developed by IPWireless. The technology has been proven in commercial deployments around the globe since 2002 with proven reliability and customer delight. Leading operators are now deploying networks in markets across five continents, including the UK, Germany, Sweden, South Africa, South-East Asia, New Zealand and Australia. The technology is based on a global standard backed by some of the largest players in the telecommunications industry. The subscriber devices offered would initially be plug-and-play Desktop Modems that use either USB or Ethernet to support PCs and LAN Gateways. The modems use extremely low power, and support downlink speeds of up to 3Mbps. The network deployment has already begun in the capital Vilnius with initial priority to the major cities. “We are proud to give the citizens and the corporations of Lithuania a network for mobile broadband services. Atenit’s and Nelté’s joint venture company will sign up leading Internet Service Providers to ensure first class Internet and data communication services including IP-based telephony. Atenit is planning a continued rapid roll-out of mobile broadband access in the Baltic Sea region,” said Torvald Bohlin, Chairman of Atenit. “We have chosen Atenit as our partner because of their extensive experience and knowledge of rapidly deploying wireless broadband access networks,” said Tadas Matulionis, General Director of Nelté. “This deployment introduces a new era of broadband services in Lithuania. The service is plug-and-play for the user and gives a broadband connectivity combined with the freedom of portability.” “With UMTS TDD technology, Atenit and Nelté will bring an unprecedented level broadband connectivity to Lithuania,” said Chris Gilbert, Chief Executive Officer, IPWireless. “Subscribers will enjoy broadband speeds wherever they are – at home, at work, at a café – all without wires.” For further information: Torvald Bohlin, Chairman of Atenit, +46 70 6236260 Håkan Örtenholm, CEO of Atenit, +46 70 6097620 Tadas Matulionis, General Director, Nelté, +370 2363636 or +370 682 21471 Also visit www.atenit.com , www.ipwireless.com and www.umtstdd.org
