Kirstie Allsopp: ‘Generation Rent’
“There’s a very distinctive line between those who genuinely can’t get onto the property ladder and those who aren’t interested. Its shocking to read 95 per cent of ‘generation rent’ have no spare cash, no interest in saving for a deposit or are trying but failing to save. Our changing way of life means less of us are living with our parents for long enough to save up for a deposit.
“But it’s not all doom and gloom, there is light at the end of the tunnel with banks and major builders already coming together to look at ways in which they can improve access to mortgages. There are also a number of things first time buyers can do to help themselves. I know from helping hundreds of people through the buying process that the same problems and pitfalls arise time and time again – lack of understanding of finance, mortgages, dealing with agents, legal processes and exchange and completion. Phil and I have devised an iPhone app, ‘Kirstie & Phil’s House Hunter’, to help first time buyers navigate this minefield combining an extensive property search function with great tools to help buyers manage their individual search, from tracking and scoring viewings, calculating finances and doing the deal to managing the move. We hope it will go some way to keeping the process stress-free and on budget for house hunters.
“Buying a home is a huge financial commitment but one that I believe will reap benefits far into the future. It’s essential first time buyers receive all the help possible as without them we’re all stuffed. The UK housing market would suffer a slowdown and those already on the housing ladder won’t be able to take the next step up the property ladder. “
