Ace Energy Obtains Over $600,000 in Funding for Energy Saving Lighting at Brooklyn Hospital
BROOKLYN, NY – September 5, 2012 – Ace Energy, Inc. (Ace) worked with SUNY Downstate University Hospital of Brooklyn at Long Island College Hospital (Downstate LICH) to obtain more than $600,000 in funding, representing over 90% of the project cost, to upgrade inefficient lighting throughout the hospital.
The hospital was utilizing inefficient T12 lighting throughout most common areas and offices. Ace retrofit the areas with new T8 lighting to provide significant energy savings, while improving the light levels and quality of light throughout. In addition, over 200 inefficient High Pressure Sodium fixtures were replaced in the hospital parking garage to create a brighter, safer, more efficient space.
The upgrade achieved a reduction of more than 1.5 million kilowatt hours, which is equivalent to removing nearly 3,000,000 lbs of Carbon Dioxide from the environment. Furthermore, the energy savings and extended lamp life will drastically decrease hospital electrical and maintenance costs. “Downstate LICH is committed to consistently improving our operations while reducing our carbon footprint, this lighting project was a simple way of accomplishing both goals,” remarked Eamon Quirke, Director of Facilities Management and Development at Downstate LICH. The combined funding and energy savings resulted in a project payback of less than 1 year for the hospital, who will continue to benefit month after month.
“Hospitals hold substantial potential for energy savings because they operate 24 hours a day, making an energy saving lighting upgrade an easy and fiscally responsible way to significantly cut costs,” explains Joseph Murray, Sales Director at Ace Energy.
Utilizing “Buy American” materials, Ace completed the more than 6,000 fixture project, spanning 5 buildings, in a mere 3 months. “Ace was able to complete the project under a tight deadline with minimal disruption to our daily operations,” commented Quirke.
In July 2012, the US Department of Energy’s T12 lighting phase-out culminated with a moratorium on the production of the inefficient lamps and ballasts. Inefficient T12 lighting is being replaced with energy saving T8, T5, and LED technology. Funding to upgrade lighting is available through the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority, along with most local utilities.
