Acklam Car Centre’s Richard Kilty in the running for North East Sports Personality of the Year

Another accolade in-sight for the 60m World Champion who was recently named Sports Person of the Year at the Gazette Sports Awards

Teeside, UK - Acklam Car Centre sponsored Richard Kilty has been nominated for the Sports Personality of the year at the BBC North East Sports Awards.

The sprinter and 60m World Champion is looking to add to his success on the track with another award off it. The 24 year-old recently added the Gazette Sport Awards’ Sportsperson of the Year to his trophy cabinet and lines up as one of the favourites for this latest accolade.

Acklam Car Centre’s Chris Andrews commented on Richard’s achievements: “Richard is an inspiration to young athletes in the Teesside area and I am delighted that Acklam Car Centre is able to sponsor him and support him on his journey.

“His success this year is testament to the amount of hard work and graft that he puts in on the running track and in the gym each day.

“I wish him all the best on the night and look forward to attending the event with him; he would be a very deserving winner.”

Richard adds: “It has been a great year and to be nominated for the award is a massive achievement. I am proud to be from Teeside and to represent the area; I want to put Teeside on the sporting map. There are some excellent athletes in the shortlist, but I fancy my chances. I think the odds should be better than the 66/1 that was placed on me ahead of the World Championships!”

The ‘Teeside Tornado’ announced a sponsorship deal with Acklam Car Centre back in September. Middlesbrough based Kilty, grew up just minutes away from Acklam Car Centre and credits the company’s support as an aid to his success this year.

2014 has been a breakthrough season for Kilty who made the most of his opportunities with Team GB to win the 15thWorld Indoor Athletics Championships 60m indoor title in Poland. He did so with a personal best time of 6.49 seconds.
