  • North East 60m Champion aiming to build on his four medals from 2014

Middlesbrough,UK - Acklam Car Centre sponsored sprinter Richard Kilty has responded in perfect fashion to his disqualification at the Glasgow International Match with a season opening personal best time of 6.57 seconds.

The ‘Teeside Tornado’ responded to the disappointment with the time in an Indoor 60m race in Poland, at the start of February.

Speaking about the disqualification and his first race of the season, the Acklam Car Centre sponsored World Champion, said:

“To have been disqualified was really disappointing; I think it was harsh of the judges to eliminate me. The French lad next to me twitched then I did and stepped out of the blocks, whereas if I had put my hand up then it would have been deemed a false start.

“Despite that, I feel really good at the moment and the 6.57 that I recorded in Poland, is the fastest time that I have ever done for my first race of the year. It’s over a tenth quicker than the time I recorded this time last year.

“I will learn from the experience in Glasgow and hopefully it won’t happen again. It is only the second time that I have ever been disqualified; the last time was over eight years ago. The time I ran in Poland would have won the race by a long way in Glasgow, so I can take heart from that.”

Kilty, who now works full time with former GB Olympic medallist Linford Christie, has another race in Germany ahead of the European Championships in Prague at the start of March.

“I just want to build on last year,” said the 25 year-old. “Every year now is about winning as many medals as possible. In 2014 I won four major medals and this year I want to win a European Indoor medal, World Relay Medal and then the target is World Championships in August, which is the big one.

“Moving forward, I just want to be a medal winning athlete for Great Britain on the international scene.”

Acklam Car Centre’s Chris Andrews, who accompanied Kilty to the North East Sports Personality Awards, said: “Richard deserves all the success and exposure that he has received in the last year and I was delighted when he told me about his time in Poland. He has worked tremendously hard to get where he is and is now reaping the rewards.

“He is the North East’s local hero and Acklam Car Centre is proud to be supporting him on his journey.”
