The construction of the Fehmarn Belt tunnel, the world’s longest road-rail tunnel at the bottom of the ocean between Denmark and Germany, has finally begun. Adapteo has been chosen to provide flexible buildings for the 30,000 square metre village FLC Village in Rødbyhavn in Denmark, which is being built to provide thousands of people working with the project with housing, amenities, and recreational spaces. For this purpose, Adapteo has designed totally new buildings and the first ones will be ready for occupation on July 21st.

The EU has named 2021 the “Year of Rail” to highlight the most sustainable, innovative, and safe transportation that we have – the train. Therefore, it is fitting that this is also the year of breaking ground in one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects, the immersed tunnel Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link between Rødbyhavn, Denmark and Puttgarden, Germany. The 18-kilometre road-rail tunnel is expected to have great impact on the Swedish industry, as it will enable travel from the Øresund Region to Hamburg in less time than to Stockholm. The construction of the tunnel also creates new job opportunities in Denmark. To provide the workers with housing, amenities, and recreational spaces, FLC Village in Rødbyhavnis currently under construction. FLC Tunnel Group North I/S, the consortium appointed by the Owner Femern A/S which is responsible for the construction of the Fehmarn Belt tunnel, has assigned Adapteo with the task of delivering and managing the village with flexible buildings.

“We are very proud to be able to offer high quality and flexible housing and recreational spaces to the people who are working with this enormous infrastructure project. It is the largest order in the history of Adapteo, and we are happy and humble for the opportunity to be a part of the realization of the tunnel that will further conjoin Denmark – and by extension, the Nordic countries – with the continent,” says Phillip Isell Lind af Hageby, President and CEO of Adapteo Group.

The 30,000 square meter village FLC Village will offer everything from housing, gyms, mini markets, a hair salon and social meeting places with leisure activities, to changing rooms and canteen. Örjan Berg at Adapteo is responsible for the brand-new design of the buildings, specifically developed for this purpose. Currently, he is on-site in Denmark supporting the project.

“The buildings are 9x3 metres and include private rooms for the residents, bathroom with  shower and toilet, and recreational spaces and outdoor terraces. This is not something that we have done before, so it is great to see how the buildings are coming along,” says Örjan Berg, product manager at Adapteo.

Construction began in late May and the first four buildings will be ready for occupation in late JulyA total of 42 new buildings will successively be completed and workers at the Fehmarn Belt project will be able to move in accordingly.

“Our construction is proceeding according to plan, and we look forward to welcoming the workers to their new accommodation soon.” Says Örjan Berg.
