Michael Porter to speak on increasing ‘Value’ to patients at Adelphi University
Decades of healthcare reform efforts have yet to create major, sustained improvements in both the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery. The solution, according to preeminent healthcare business strategist and Harvard Professor Michael Porter, who will speak on October 27 at Adelphi University, is to transform the nation’s healthcare system into a competitive model in which medical outcomes are measured against the cost of care, establishing a relative “value of care” provided to patients.
Adelphi University’s Robert B. Willumstad School of Business will host Professor Porter as part of a series of events -- including a lecture, discussion and panel -- focusing on reorganizing healthcare and training the leaders who will implement those reforms. The event, held from 11:00 a.m.-2:15 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom at the Ruth S. Harley University Center on the Garden City campus, is free and open to the public. In 2014, Adelphi’s business school marks the 50th anniversary of being chartered by New York State as a degree-granting school.
Adelphi is a market leader in educating decision-makers in the region’s healthcare industry on meeting the managerial, organizational and leadership challenges that lead to increasing the value of the care that they and the hospitals with which they are associated provide. About one-third of the Willumstad School’s MBA degree candidates are doctors, nurses and healthcare administrators.
“Because the healthcare sector is our region’s largest employer and a key economic driver, Adelphi’s role in equipping healthcare professionals with business acumen is critical in addressing the challenges they face,” said Adelphi President Dr. Robert A. Scott. “Quality and cost challenges confronting providers have become even more acute in the face of major events in healthcare, such as the Affordable Care Act, bundled payments and global health crises.”
In his presentation, Professor Porter will discuss specific aspects of a strategic agenda that will enable a transformation to metric-driven, value-based healthcare delivery in which patients will not only bear a larger burden of paying for care, but also play a larger role in deciding how they will spend their healthcare dollars. He will also participate in a panel, moderated by Dr. Scott, to discuss solutions and strategies for enacting healthcare realignment in the U.S.
Other members of the panel are John Rowe, professor of health policy at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and former president and CEO of Mount Sinai NYU Health and the former chairman and CEO of Aetna, Inc.; Gregory K. Park, Senior Managing Director and Group Head of U.S. Healthcare M&A and Capital and Debt Advisory for Ernst & Young; and Robert Isaksen, Bank of America’s Long Island Market President and Market Executive for Bank of America’s Healthcare group.
Professor Porter is recognized by governments, corporations, non-profits, and academic circles around the world for his knowledge and authority in company strategy, competitiveness between nations and regions, and strategic solutions to societal problems. He has authored more than 19 books and numerous articles, including The Competitive Advantage of Nations, On Competition and Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results.
