Festival Fever hits Fulneck School
Pupils at Fulneck School in Pudsey captured the spirit of España this week to celebrate the beginning of Lent by hosting the ‘Carnaval de Fulneck’. Fulneck Junior School celebrated the Spanish festival by cooking tasty tapas, dancing, and singing in Spanish, as well as donning colourful animal costumes they made themselves. Shrove Tuesday celebrates the start of Lent in England, and as part of the school’s increasing emphasis on foreign languages at Key Stage One, celebrating the Carnival taught the children about Spanish culture at this time of year. Catherine Flanagan, Head of Key Stage One Modern Foreign Languages, said: “I have taught in schools across Spain in Cordoba, Seville and Granada, and the ‘Carnaval de Fulneck’ captured the energy and excitement of the traditional Spanish Carnival. “Our pupils start learning languages at a young age and the department aims to make Spanish and French an exciting part of the curriculum by using events such as Carnival and school plays to allow students to illustrate their language skills.” David Goulbourn, Headmaster of Fulneck Junior School, said: “In a week which saw the World Maths Marathon and World Book Day Read-a-thon, to end with a traditional celebration of language through the 'Carnaval de Fulneck' showed Fulneck Junior School's culturally diverse curriculum at its dynamic best.” “At Fulneck School we understand the importance of a broad and balanced curriculum so it has been wonderful to harness the best that the cultures of the world have to offer and bring them to our pupils. “The staff at Fulneck School have an incredible energy and dedication to Modern Foreign Languages and through this we are truly able to combine teaching and enjoyment to provide an outstanding learning experience for all abilities and all ages.
