New Prospects members win coveted award

Two men with Downs Syndrome have received an award for the significant progress they have made towards living independently. Graham Williamson, 37, and Neil Wooding, 38, are so excited about becoming more independent that they have moved from their family homes to a place of their own, with a little help from supported living service New Prospects Association. Since they have started being supported by New Prospects the pair’s development has been so impressive that their fellow members at the Corner Club, a social club for adults with learning disabilities in Benton, have presented them with the 2009 Karen Hoggett Award. The award is given in memory of former club member Karen Hoggett, who had profound learning and physical disabilities and passed away aged 38 in 2001. It is presented annually to members of the Corner Club who have made considerable personal developments over the past year. Graham and Neil received a silver trophy and framed certificates to mark their achievements, which now have pride of place in their home. Ellen Vick, Chief Executive of New Prospects Association said: “Since we started working with Graham and Neil they have started to get out in their local community more and now like to manage many aspects of life for themselves. It’s wonderful to see them enjoying their new freedom in a place they can call their own and we are there to support them whenever they need it. “Both men love going along to the Corner Club, so it’s wonderful that their peers have recognised their efforts in this way. Graham and Neil are extremely proud of their achievement and everyone at New Prospects is thrilled that they have been chosen for this award.” New Prospects is an established provider of help and support services for people with learning and physical disabilities living in the Tyne and Wear area. The charity offers a range of services, from 24 hour live-in help, to outreach support and day opportunities. They provide a specifically tailored service for each person they work with, focusing on every service user’s individual needs and preferences. The Corner Club meets every first and third Friday of the month in St Andrew’s Church, Benton, and has around 25 members with a learning disability. There are 17 volunteer helpers who make sure that the members get out and about. Neil has been a member of the club for many years and Graham has joined during the last 12 months.
