Yorkshire Aims for Top Grades with coHearentVision

Yorkshire’s leading charity for Deaf and Blind people is starting its latest intake of British Sign Language (BSL) courses this September - and is challenging learners to hit the heights of last year’s students. Enrolment at coHearentVision is now open for its popular BSL courses, which cater to all levels from beginners to those already experienced in signing. Bosses at the charity are hoping this year’s students will prove as successful as last year’s star pupil, Kelly Palmer (55), from Garforth, who completed her Level 3 NVQ in BSL and was named regional ‘Learner of the Year’ at the annual Signature awards. Although she was struggling with dyslexia, Kelly was determined to do well in her course in order to help her career as an Occupational Therapy Support Worker, where she felt her communication skills would be improved by learning BSL. The Leeds Sign Language Interpreting Service at coHearentVision offered Kelly support throughout the course, showing its dedication to helping students flourish in the lessons. Jonathan Field, Strategic Development Manager at coHearentVision’s interpreting service, said: “We want people to be as successful in the classes as former students, such as Kelly, who is a shining example of how valuable the BSL courses are. “She not only shone in the classes, but also really enjoyed her experience – we were so happy to see Kelly rewarded for her hard work while learning BSL, and we hope it encourages other people in Yorkshire to enrol on a course. “Whether, like Kelly, people want to learn to boost their careers, or are studying just as a hobby, learning a new language is a fantastic achievement and coHearentVision is proud to give others this opportunity.” There are courses to suit all abilities and experience, ranging from short beginner and taster courses, right through to levels 1, 2 and 3 in BSL. Last date for enrolment is 27th September. To donate or find out more about coHearentVision, visit www.cohearentvision.org.uk or call 0113 243 8328.
