Rice Recognized as Lifetime Contributor at 2013 UCLA Engineering Awards Gala
CTS Cement Manufacturing Corporation | Rapid Set® - a leader in construction cement technology – has announced that Edward K. Rice, founder, has been recognized as a lifetime contributor from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Held annually by the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, the awards highlight the contributions that help the school maintain its standards of excellence in engineering education, research and public service. The ceremony was held on Nov. 1 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Rice was recognized with a Lifetime Contribution Award for his years of service and support of the engineering program at UCLA.
“It is a privilege to be recognized with such high honors by the University,” said Rice. “Witnessing the growth of not only the university but the young students pursuing the engineering field has been a rewarding accomplishment in my career. I am proud to be a part of the continued success and innovation UCLA provides for these future engineering professionals.”
Along with his wife, Linda, Rice has been involved bestowing gifts to benefit the students, including the creation of the Edward K. Rice Conference Room in Boelter Hall, several
scholarships, and the Edward K. and Linda L. Rice Term Chair in Materials Science. In addition, the Edward K. Rice Outstanding Student Awards were created to recognize young innovators in the engineering program at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. Four students were recognized by Rice during the awards presentation.
Rice is the founder and chairman of CTS Cement Manufacturing Corporation. With more than 60 years of experience in the industry, his expertise involves developing new methods in concrete and building technology, solving problems of urban blight and substandard housing, as well as knowledge in real estate development. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from UC Berkeley. Rice also holds a Ph.D. from UCLA, where he was a professor of the UCLA School of Engineering and served as an adjunct professor in the Materials Science and Engineering department.
