Nine Advocate Hospitals named again among the nation’s safest

Advocate Health Care hospitals are being recognized for excellence in patient safety by the Leapfrog Group, a Washington D.C-based, independent industry watchdog organization. The announcement was made today. Leapfrog uses publicly available data on 28 different evidence-based safety measures and assigns letter grades from A to F based on each hospital’s success in preventing harm to patients.

Leapfrog posted grades for more than 2,500 hospitals across the country for their efforts to protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. Just 32 percent of those analyzed received an A grade. In Illinois, of the 113 hospitals graded, 64 earned an A.

Advocate Christ Medical Center, Advocate Condell Medical Center, Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Advocate South Suburban Hospital, Advocate Sherman Hospital, and Advocate Trinity Hospital, all earned an “A.”

“Our patients deserve the safest and finest care possible,” said Lee Sacks, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer, Advocate Health Care. “This recognition is a tribute to our physicians and clinical teams who are committed to delivering the highest quality of clinical care to those we are privileged to serve.”

With avoidable hospital errors the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S., patient safety must be a top priority, Leapfrog officials said.

The recognition comes on the heels of Advocate being named among the nation's top 5 largest health systems by Truven Health Analytics earlier this month. It’s the 5th time Advocate has made the list—one of only two systems in the nation with this distinction.
