AFRY and Gottlieb Paludan Architects to develop new ferry terminal at Skeppsbron in Stockholm, Sweden, on behalf of the Stockholm Region
The ambition of the Public Transport Administration/the Stockholm Region is to make the quay area come alive, strengthen the public transport system and the location’s connection to the sea, as well as interact with the characteristic culture-historical architecture of the Old Town of Stockholm.
The area surrounding Skeppsbron and the new ferry terminal constitutes a complex part of the Old Town’s quay area. The place is currently undergoing significant changes in conjunction with the City of Stockholm’s current reconstruction of the Slussen area. The new ferry terminal is to promote the use of public transport, fit in with the surrounding environment and bring new qualities to the area.
AFRY has been procured to be responsible for the initial project management services and design together with Gottlieb Paludan Architects, which is a part of AFRY. Design and engineering will go hand in hand, and the plan is for the facility to function both as a public transport hub as well as a meeting place in the city, offering the opportunity to spend time by the sea.
“AFRY has been involved with the work on the Slussen area for many years, and we are very proud and happy to continue being a part of the development of this area,” says Sara Bergendorff, Section Manager, Urban Planning at AFRY.
“We look forward to strengthening the urban life and to bring a new and modern link between the city and the sea, in a balance between maintenance, adaptation and renewal. The ferry terminal will improve the whole area,” says Mette Neimann, Architect and Head of Department, Mobility and Transport, at Gottlieb Paludan Architects.
The new ferry terminal will be in place in 2023.
