The City of Helsinki has awarded the consortium of AFRY and the construction company GRK to design and construct a part of a new tram project in Helsinki. The project includes the tram connection between Kalasatama and Pasila, as well as additional design and construction works such as streets, parks and municipal utilities. The tram line will improve Helsinki’s light rail network of sustainable mobility and supports Helsinki’s vision of being the most functional city in the world.

The project will be carried out employing the project alliance model, and is divided into two parts. The consortium of AFRY Finland Oy, GRK Infra Oy and GRK Rail Oy has been appointed for the second part. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the client Helsinki City Transport (HKL) and the vendor consortium of the first part.

”The project supports city development and expands the network of sustainable mobility. I welcome everyone to this joint project journey from Kalasatama to Pasila,” says Mikko Asikainen, Project Manager, HKL.

The development phase will start in early May, during which the final scope and implementation will be planned and cost target and incentive system determined. The decision about moving into the implementation phase will be made in the spring of 2021.

”We are proud to be part of creating the future city and its traffic solutions in Helsinki. The project is an excellent continuum to AFRY’s tram projects which make cities even better to live in,” says AFRY’s Mikko Inkala, Head of Transportation in Finland.

The new tram line will contribute to Helsinki’s constantly developing transport infrastructure and sustainable rail network. The line will smoothly connect the centres of Kalasatama and Pasila, and will link tram, metro and train networks with each other.

The new tram line is planned to be in operation in the autumn 2024.

The value of the order is undisclosed. The order will be recognised within Infrastructure order stock in Q2/2020. The purchase decision was issued by the City of Helsinki on 7 April, and will enter into force after the appeal period closes. The contract for the development phase will be signed after that.
