AFRY awarded assignment to enhance rail capacity in southern Sweden

AFRY has been awarded by the Swedish Transport Administration to design a new passing track between Teckomatorp and Kävlinge in Skåne, southern Sweden. The project aims to strengthen rail capacity and punctuality, particularly in view of the anticipated increase in freight transport once the Fehmarn Belt connection becomes operational.

The new passing track is designed to enable efficient passing of longer passenger and freight trains. The project is expected to deliver socio-economic benefits through reduced delays, shorter travel times, and lower costs for both freight and passenger transport. The assignment includes the development of a railway plan, system documentation, construction documents, and tender documentation for the execution contract, as well as permit management and production support.

The passing track is a key component in future-proofing one of the region’s most critical railway sections and in creating capacity for a growing cross-border transport system. By enabling longer and more frequent freight trains, the project supports the shift from road to rail – a central element in the transition towards more sustainable freight logistics.

“This is a strategic assignment that strengthens sustainable rail transport and contributes to a robust infrastructure in southern Sweden. We are proud to apply our broad expertise in railway design”, says Peter Åkerlund, Market Manager Rail Sweden at AFRY.

The design and planning phase began in the summer of 2025, and final delivery is scheduled for no later than fall 2031.
