Worldwide PMC Sdn. Bhd. (WPMC) has awarded AFRY a contract to provide owner’s engineering services for a waste-to-energy project in Kuala Selangor, Malaysia, that will enable more efficient and sustainable municipal waste management.

State-of-the-art waste-to-energy (WtE) facilities are an essential component for accelerating the transition to a sustainable future, as they are designed to recover the value of the waste that remains after reusing and recycling, and convert it into energy. The new plant in Malaysia will significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfills and consequently also the methane emissions released from landfills.

The Jeram WtE project will consist of the construction of a plant with a capacity of approximately 2,700 tons per day, producing a net electrical output of up to 52 MW for export to the national grid.

WPMC is a subsidiary of Worldwide Holdings Bhd. (WHB) which is an investment holding company and a leader in environmental management services. WPMC has been appointed to manage the construction of the project. Jeram WtE is a key element of WHB’s Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre which will also include composting plant, material recovery facility, anaerobic digester and a research and development facility.

AFRY’s assignment encompasses the provision of project management services, engineering review and monitoring of construction, erection, commissioning as well as testing activities.

“The WHB project is a flagship waste-to-energy initiative in Malaysia representing modern, efficient and environmentally friendly management of municipal waste, considering that otherwise the waste would be landfilled. We are honoured to play such a crucial technical role in its construction. After assisting WHB during the development phase, we are pleased to continue in the construction phase of this WtE project, which will enable Malaysia to optimise its municipal waste management", says Petteri Härkki, AFRY’s Regional Director for Asia.
