AFRY collaborates with the FIA on global road safety index
The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), with the support of the FIA Foundation, promoted its ground-breaking FIA Road Safety Index at the Vision Zero conference in Stockholm this week. AFRY has contributed to the development and is also responsible auditor.
Approximately 1.3 million lives are lost annually, and a staggering 50 million individuals are injured within the global transport system. Recognizing traffic safety as a public health issue, the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified businesses as directly involved in nearly 50% of traffic-related fatalities, and the United Nations has passed a resolution encouraging companies and organisations to measure and report their safety footprint, and take action to tackle the global traffic safety crisis.
To this end, the FIA decided to work with AFRY to develop a comprehensive tool for measuring and improving organisations’ and companies’ safety footprint. To do so, they carried out six pilot projects to test and develop the FIA Road Safety Index.
At the Vision Zero Conference, the FIA announced that TotalEnergies has become the first private sector company to receive 3-star recognition, the highest level of achievement as part of the newly launched FIA Road Safety Index.
FIA Secretary General for Automobile Mobility and Tourism Jacob Bangsgaard said: “If we want to reach the Sustainable Development Goal to halve road safety crashes by 2030, we need to embark everyone on the journey towards building a culture of safety. Companies and organisations have an immense role to play and with the FIA Road Safety Index we are giving them the comprehensive solution they need to assess, report and take concrete action to improve road safety. I’m pleased to see that TotalEnergies has achieved the maximum result. I am convinced their achievement will encourage other companies and organisations to implement the Index.”
When organizations and companies commit to implement the FIA Road Safety Index, they pledge to adhere to guidelines that prioritize road safety within their operations. AFRY will support FIA and FIA Member Clubs in the audit process.
Claes Tingvall, Senior Advisor Traffic Safety at AFRY and founder of Vision Zero, said, "When companies and organizations integrate Traffic Safety into their sustainability reporting and actively strive to improve their ratings, we will witness tangible results in lives saved every day. This marks a significant step towards achieving the vision of zero fatalities within the transport system."
About the FIA Road Safety Index
The Index serves as a set of measurable indicators enabling both public and private entities within the transportation sector to work towards achieving the Agenda 2030 sustainability goals. By integrating the index score and ongoing efforts into their sustainability reporting, companies can effectively assess their performance and benchmark their progress against other organizations. Moreover, the FIA Road Safety Index revolves around mapping the value chain of companies, enabling them to identify and improve their contributions to road safety incrementally.
