AFRY has been the lead planning partner in The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s TampereJyväskylä railway planning project since the beginning of 2023. As the project now moves on to the implementation phase, AFRY has been chosen to continue as lead designer.

The Tampere–Jyväskylä railway line is one of the main lines of the Finnish railway network. To enable a regular timetable for passenger transportation, increase the capacity of the rail section, reduce travel time, and improve resilience to disruptions, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has chosen to continue to partner with AFRY during the implementation phase of planning. Among the chosen tasks are realignment of tracks, implementing double tracks and new stations.

Eero Virtanen, project manager at the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, states that the goals set for the development phase have been achieved excellently.

“We consider it important that the service provider is strongly committed to the project from an early stage. The development of practices and the creation of planning processes and schedules together provide a solid foundation for efficient and high-quality implementation of the planning,” says Virtanen.

According to Virtanen, the transparency and openness in cost estimation for the selected destinations' planning, as well as defining the performance indicators of the incentive system together, have built a deep trust between the client and the provider.

“When the selected designer is involved in the preparation of the planning project, the development of the work program, and the setting target schedule, the focus shifts from individual subprojects to optimizing the overall picture and resource utilization as large-scale entities over a longer perspective. This brings efficiency to the planning process and leads to cost savings in planning expenses,” says Mikko Inkala, Head of AFRY’s Transportation business in Finland.

The implementation phase is scheduled to commence in September 2023.
