AFRY evaluates a new mini water plant on Gotland
The building material company Cementa is planning to finance and construct a new water treatment plant to strengthen the drinking water supply in Slite on Gotland. AFRY contributes with competences in drinking water production and construction projects and has been involved in putting a miniature water plant into operation during the autumn. Now the first results from the pilot project can be presented.
Cementa has now been granted a four year limestone quarry permit in Slite and continues the work of planning for a new water plant, which will greatly strengthen the water supply in northern Gotland. As part of the planning phase of a full-scale water plant, AFRY has been commissioned to contribute with its knowledge in the pre-study and pilot projects that Cementa started in 2021.
“Today, the increasing shortage of drinking water is a growing problem in many parts of the world, including Sweden, where Gotland has been particularly exposed. We are very proud of participating in this project, which is an important part of our work toward a sustainable society. AFRY contributes with our expertise in drinking water production and experience in the design and project implementation of new industrial facilities”, says Ann Winzell, Manager Process Design new plants, Food & Pharma, AFRY.
The water plant pilot, which has been in operation since September 2022 at File hajdar, is a smaller-scale model of a fully functional water treatment plant, about one-tenth the size of a full-scale one. The mini water plant, which is powered by electricity, has been operating for approximately 1,000 hours, generating comprehensive and verified results from the sampling. The results from the pilot plant showed both excellent values regarding the quality of the future drinking water for the subscribers and a very stable and energy-efficient operation of the plant.
“By taking care of the water that collects in the limestone quarries, storing it, and creating drinking water from it, we want to significantly strengthen the general water supply here in northern Gotland. The results from the pilot project are extremely promising, and we see that a new water plant would really make a difference to the water supply throughout the year”, says Matilda Hoffstedt, Factory Manager Cementa in Slite.
The pre-study is expected to be completed in the summer of 2023, and the objective is to be able to put a state-of-the-art full-scale water plant into operation by 2027. The planning for the intended water plant takes place in close cooperation with Region Gotland. In order for Cementa to be able to carry out the investment, the company needs a long-term quarry permit for its operations on Gotland.
