AFRY signs agreement with the Swedish Transport Administration for electrification of the railway section Nässjö – Värnamo
The project will shorten travel time and is an important step in the transition towards more sustainable passenger and freight transports. Electrification of the railway line enables increased speed, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, and provides positive environmental effects through the transfer of goods from road to railway.
When the Swedish Transport Administration electrifies the railway section Nässjö – Värnamo, it will enable traffic by modern electric trains, more efficient freight transport to and from the port of Gothenburg, and reduction of travel time between Jönköping and Värnamo. Once the new railway between Byarum and Tenhult is built, the travel time between Jönköping and Värnamo will be less than 50 minutes.
AFRY has been assigned the task of producing the railway plan, system document and the tender documents on which the procurement of the construction is based, as well as site follow-up. The agreement is estimated to be worth approximately SEK 34 million and will begin in 2021.
– We are proud to contribute to more sustainable freight transport and increased possibilities to commute for work and studies in the region. Electrification of the railway network is important to accelerate the transition to a sustainable society, says Kajsa Rosén, Business Area Manager Transportation, AFRY.
