AFRY to design Vantaa tramway in Finland together with alliance partners

The City of Vantaa has appointed a consortium consisting of AFRY, WSP and Sweco to design the eastern section of the Vantaa tramway. Together, the alliance parties, including GRK and Kreate as contractors, will design and build an 8.5-kilometer stretch of the tramway that will make Vantaa the fourth city in Finland to have a tramway.

This alliance marks the beginning of the development phase that will run until summer 2025. The development phase involves refining design solutions, setting target costs, and preparing the schedule and tasks for the implementation phase.

The Vantaa tramway line spans a total length of 19 kilometers. The comprehensive project is divided into western and eastern sections with AFRY, along with its alliance partners, is responsible for the eastern part, focusing on tramway, roads, bridges, municipal engineering, and environmental aspects.

This tramway project is significant in transforming Vantaa's urban landscape and enhancing mobility. It offers a cleaner, greener way to travel, improving high-quality public transport connections within the Helsinki metropolitan area. The new line will integrate the Helsinki-Vantaa airport and eastern parts of the city into the rail network, enhancing cross-city connectivity. The tramway operations are expected to commence in 2029.
