AFRY to lead project planning of new hospital in Västerås, Sweden
Region Västmanland in Sweden has recently conducted a tendering process, inviting bids for the planning of a new emergency hospital in Västerås, central Sweden. AFRY has been awarded the responsibility for leading the project planning in the first stage.
The new hospital will meet the healthcare needs of the future. Among other things, the premises are to provide space for surgery, x-ray, an emergency department, hospital beds, medical practices, a childbirth department and an intensive care unit. Furthermore, there will be a number of maintenance buildings for storage of supplies and electric power supply to the hospital. In total, the buildings will provide a space of around 85,000 square meters. The total budget for the hospital, including interior design and equipment, amounts to SEK 6.8 billion.

The first part of AFRY’s work will consist of producing the program documents for the new emergency hospital. This will involve project managers, project planning managers, CAD and BIM strategists, construction managers, construction economists as well as environment and risk engineers, among others, from AFRY.
The work on the program documents began in the autumn of 2019 and is expected to take two years. Construction is estimated to last about eight years.
