AFRY to support clean energy transmission in Germany

ARGE ILF and Arcadis have chosen AFRY to contribute to the German Rhine-Main Link – a 600 kilometer underground cable connection to transport clean energy from offshore wind farms to the Rhine-Main region.

Germany wants to become climate neutral by 2045 and significantly expand the share of renewable energy. This requires offshore wind farms to produce green electricity, as well as new lines to transport it.

The Rhine-Main Link is one of the key projects in the German energy transition. The high-performance energy corridor is expected to become operational in 2033 and bring up to eight gigawatts (GW) of renewable wind power directly to Hessen and strengthen the Rhine-Main economic region.

ARGE ILF and Arcadis, in a consortium, are selected to carry out the project, and through this consortium, AFRY will be responsible for project management and geological planning, field work, site supervision, modelling and document management along the stretch for 2 of 8 parts of the new connection.

“Continuing to support Germany’s ambitious target of achieving climate neutrality by 2045 is directly aligned with AFRY’s mission to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society. We have previously been involved in the SuedLink and are proud to also contribute to the Rhine-Main Link with both project management, geological and environmental expertise to this important and challenging project", says Markku Oksanen, VP and Head of Business Area Central Europe, AFRY.

AFRY’s scope for the Rhine-Main Link is expected to be finished in 2026.
