Agria UK Spearheads Animal Welfare Proposition for 2023

February, 2023: Following a year that saw the world's oldest pet insurer launch the UK's only lifetime insurance for horses, Agria UK has announced its focus on animal welfare for 2023 and beyond. With the cost-of-living crisis continuing to put pressure on pet and horse owners, Agria’s focus will be to educate owners so that they can continue to protect and prioritise their animals’ welfare.

Based upon the Animal Welfare Act 2006, when related to horses, the areas of focus become the equine domains. These comprise; Behavioural Interactions, Nutrition, Health, Environment and Mental State, providing a physical and mental framework for optimum horse welfare. And while the Act is there to protect animals from harm and mistreatment, Agria is also aiming to highlight the things that typical horse owners can do to make their animals’ lives as good as they can possibly be.

Providing pets with healthcare since it first insured an animal, a horse, in 1890, the foundation of Agria’s ethos is to allow animals to thrive, whilst providing peace of mind for their owners. This is a passion shared with customers as well as the many partners, vets, breeders and rehoming organisations Agria works closely with – ultimately its whole community.

Roly Owers, Chief Executive of leading equine charity, World Horse Welfare, comments,  “We applaud Agria for running this campaign to help guide horse owners on what their horses need to live well.”

Agrias welfare campaign is hallmarked by clear recognition that quality of life for any animal depends on their physical and mental wellbeing. This means both protecting our horses and ponies from the negative — such hunger, thirst and pain — and giving them plenty of opportunities to have positive experiences – the sort of positive experiences that are often summarised as the three Fs: freedom, friends and forage.

"It is heartening to see Agria flex their corporate muscle, and use their vast client base and team of elite sponsored riders, to extend these important messages further.

Vicki Wentworth, CEO, Agria UK, said: “2022 saw us achieve our ambition of becoming a carbon positive insurer, which helps us provide a legacy of love for our horses, pets and their places. From that inspirational success we now turn our sights to protecting their welfare in every way.

“We benefit hugely from our partnerships with our horses - they enrich our lives in so many ways. At Agria, we want to return that generosity by making their lives as rich as possible; we are their entire world and they need us to give them the best possible life.  We continue to donate funds for research into animal welfare, and support hundreds of animal rescues, but we care so deeply that we want the conversation of 2023 to be how we can help animals to lead their best possible lives. As we look to the future, we will be exploring these needs, interviewing specialists, sharing research and reviewing case studies in a fascinating year of  learning.”
