The new brand Agria Petinsure, formerly Petinsure, is entering the Irish market with a clear mission. “Our overall aim is to increase the insurance rate for pets, thus increasing their welfare and their pet owners’ peace of mind”, says Bernard O´Sullivan, CEO at Agria Petinsure Ireland, which has its head office in Cork.

Agria is the second largest pet insurer in Europe and has insured pets for over 130 years. In February 2022, the Swedish-based pet insurance company Agria Djurförsäkring acquired the Irish company Capstone Financial Services Limited, which traded as Petinsure. Agria has rebranded Petinsure to Agria Petinsure and will underwrite policies replacing Arch Insurance (EU) DAC.

Agria currently operates in nine European markets with the goal to further increase insurance for dogs and cats.

"We know from establishing businesses in other European countries that the pet insurance uptake usually increases gradually after entering a new market. We will, of course, strive for this in the Irish market as well, including increasing pet owners' understanding of the importance of insuring their pets," says O’Sullivan.

Low pet insurance rate in Ireland
Currently, the insurance rate for dogs in the Irish market is approximately 10% -15%, while the rate for cats is approximately 5%. It is estimated that 90% of dogs and 50% of cats in Sweden have pet insurance. Agria Petinsure believes that the same safety should be available for all Irish pets, and pet owners should enjoy peace of mind if their pet needs medical treatment.

“Extended treatments or major surgeries can be financially burdensome for pet owners. A pet insurance policy is the best way to ensure that your pet will receive the necessary medical care, including in an emergency. Many dogs and cats may also require care as they grow older. Lifelong insurance can prove to be a safety net for these situations.” says O'Sullivan.

Agria Petinsure also has plans to work closely with animal welfare organisations, vets, and breeders in Ireland to ensure pets and their owners are provided with most comprehensive care.
