Fireworks Worry One in Three Dogs – Agria Urges Pet Owners to Act in Time

A survey from Agria reveals that 31 percent of dog owners say their dogs become very frightened and stressed by fireworks, while an additional 28 percent notice a short-term fear that eventually subsides.

Among cat owners, the corresponding figures are 19 percent and 38 percent, respectively. At the same time, 40 percent of dog owners and 43 percent of cat owners report that their pets are largely unaffected.

“Loud noises and unpredictable flashes of light can be perceived as a direct threat to the animal. Dogs tend to show prolonged stress, while many cats recover more quickly – but no animal should have to suffer,” says Lotta Möller Koivisto, veterinarian at Agria.

Important to Prevent Fear

Chronic stress can cause behavioral changes, a weakened immune system, and an increased risk of accidents as the animal tries to escape the noise. A calm pet also means calmer people – the psychosocial benefits of a healthy animal are well documented.

Agria’s Advice for Holidays with Fireworks

  1. Create a safe zone – Muffle sounds with thick curtains and let your pet choose a hiding place.
  2. Train desensitization in advance – Low-volume recordings of fireworks can gradually help your pet get used to the noise.
  3. Pheromones and calming supplements – Consult your veterinarian about what is suitable for your dog or cat.
  4. Exercise early in the day – A tired dog copes with stress better.
  5. Service dogs assisting people with, for example, diabetes or PTSD can themselves be distracted by loud bangs; consult your trainer about extra protective measures.

“By planning ahead and reducing exposure to sudden noises, we can make life safer for both animals and people,” concludes Lotta Möller Koivisto.
