Keeping Dogs Safe in the Sweltering Summer: A Guide for Irish Pet Owners

Met Éireann recently announced that June 2023 was the hottest June on record. As summer temperatures soar, pet owners in Ireland are reminded to take extra precautions to ensure the well-being of their furry companions. The rising heat can pose serious risks to dogs, but with a few simple measures, they can stay comfortable and safe.

How should dog owners protect their furry friends from extreme heat?

  • Never leave your dog alone in a car: Extreme temperatures can quickly turn a parked car into a dangerous environment for pets. Even with the windows down, a car can heat up rapidly, leading to heatstroke or worse. Always bring your dog with you or leave them at home in a cool and well-ventilated space.

  • Provide access to fresh water: Hydration is essential for dogs in hot weather. Make sure your dog always has access to clean and cool water. Bring a portable water bowl when going for walks or outings.

  • Take care of vulnerable dogs: Older dogs, puppies, and dogs with certain health conditions are more susceptible to heat-related issues. Provide extra care and attention to these dogs during hot weather, ensuring they have a cool and comfortable environment.

  • Avoid sun-bathing: Dogs can get sunburnt the same as humans can, so even though they may love nothing more than to stretch out in the sun, please protect your pet's nose and other exposed areas. You could also buy some dog sunscreen to protect your dog.

  • Schedule walks during cooler times: Avoid taking long walks during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are lower. This helps prevent overheating and protects your dog's paws from hot asphalt.

  • Cooling devices: Cooling vests, cooling pads and cooling beds, if used correctly, can help the dog in the heat. Water bottles or bowls that are easy to carry are good for all dogs.

  • Beware of heat on public transportation: Buses, trains, and subways may not always have adequate air conditioning, leading to uncomfortable conditions for dogs. If you notice it's too hot, consider getting off at the next stop and finding an alternative means of transportation.

Managing Signs of Extreme Heat:

If your dog shows signs of weakness, confusion, or vomiting due to overheating, it's important to act quickly. Soak a towel in cool but not freezing water and place this around your pet. Avoid ice-cold water as it may shock the dog or constrict blood vessels and reduce the cooling effect. Then, seek immediate veterinary assistance for further treatment.

By following these guidelines and being proactive in hot weather pet care, dog owners can ensure their furry friends stay safe and comfortable throughout the summer.
