Managing Seasonal Allergies in Dogs: Tips for Relief and Prevention
Pets in Ireland, like some of the other European nations encountering summer, are expected to encounter seasonal allergies. These allergies are often triggered by various environmental factors. If your dog is scratching more than usual, there could be a chance they are suffering from an allergic reaction.
In addition to itching and excessive scratching, dogs may exhibit symptoms such as red and inflamed skin, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, ear infections, increased licking or biting of paws and legs, and gastrointestinal problems.
“Preventive measures to manage summer allergies in pets include regular bathing to remove allergens from the fur, frequent cleaning of bedding and living areas, avoiding outdoor activities during peak pollen times, using air purifiers, and administering vet-recommended allergy medications or immunotherapy if necessary.” Says Bernard O’Sullivan, Managing Director at Agria Petinsure.
Here are some common summer-related seasonal allergies for pets you should keep an eye out for:
-
Pollen: Pollen from trees, grasses, and flowers is a major allergen for many pets. In Ireland, common pollen-producing plants include birch, oak, grasses like ryegrass and Timothy grass, and various wildflowers. Pets may experience allergic reactions when they come into contact with airborne pollen particles.
-
Dust Mites: Dust mites are microscopic creatures found in house dust and bedding materials. They thrive in warm and humid environments, which are more prevalent during the summer. Dust mite allergies can cause skin irritation, itching, and respiratory problems in pets.
-
Insect Bites: Mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and other insects are more active during the summer. Pets can have allergic reactions to insect bites, leading to localized swelling, itching, and discomfort. Flea allergy dermatitis is a common condition caused by a hypersensitivity to flea saliva.
-
Mold and Mildew: Increased humidity during the summer can promote the growth of mould and mildew in damp areas. Pets may develop allergies to these fungi, which can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, and exacerbate existing allergies.
-
Chemical Irritants: Summer often involves the use of various chemicals, such as fertilizers, pesticides, and cleaning products. These chemicals can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive pets when they come into contact with them or inhale them.
Tips to prevent allergies:
To minimize the risk of allergies, it is advisable to store your pet's food in a tightly sealed container to reduce the presence of dust and potential contaminants. Additionally, washing your pet's bedding with non-biological liquid or powder, or using specific hypoallergenic products, can help decrease the likelihood of allergies.
Treatment:
Treatment options for allergies in pets aim to alleviate symptoms. The specific treatment needed depends on the pet's specific allergies and what works best for them.
In certain cases, regular bathing with a specialized shampoo, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids, or dietary changes may be beneficial. In other cases, medications in the form of injections or tablets may be necessary. Immunotherapy, also known as hyposensitisation, is another treatment approach used in some cases.
Sometimes a combination of different treatment methods is required to effectively manage the symptoms. It is important to note that while most dogs respond positively to treatment attempts, there are rare instances where certain dogs may not experience complete relief from their allergies despite various interventions.
If you suspect your pet has a seasonal allergy, it is advisable to consult with a veterinarian immediately.
