Miami, Fl October 11, 2010.  For the 2nd year in a row, Fashion Design & Merchandising students from Miami International University of Art & Design created garments inspired by chocolate for Aventura Mall’s Chocolate Festival that took place Sunday, October 10 from 12:00pm – 4:00pm.

Of over 30 garments submitted by Miami International University of Art & Design students, only a dozen were selected and featured on the runway show.  The dresses were all made of chocolate wrappers from varying brands and the winning garments were so well made they could easily be mistaken for couture. The winning garments with their respective descriptions and designers are listed below:

  • 1st place  Lindt Couture Designers:   Adan Bravo,  & Ana Herrera, Model:  Deana Nunez
    • The dress was created with the Lindt Chocolate wrappers; they used the ribbons, tissue paper, and the actual chocolate wrappers. The bodice or bustier was woven tissue and the Lindt ribbon, the Lindt box was cut to add the asymmetric trim and the skirt was designed with the lining of the tissue and the wrappers were designed to form the extreme full skirt short in front and long in back all to give the look of couture.
  • 2nd place “Goldiva” Designers:  Maria Demopoulos & Paola Ramirez Model:  Sara Richardson
    • The dress was designed from the famous Godiva Chocolates. The strapless top was woven Godiva tissue in gold and white; the skirt was of gold and white signature papers all curled to give the layers to the floor. The gold wrapping of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup miniatures, Godiva, and Ferrero Rocher chocolates were also used to create the gold and white elegance of the skirt.
  • 3rd place Bags to Dresses Designer Mariah Mills, Model:  Zalirys Made
    • The dress was designed with the M&M’s Chocolate and Peanut bags to form the bodice of the dress. The skirt was formed with 4,000 of the brown Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups to give the appearance of layered brown rosettes.

“Our students truly outdid themselves this year – the finalists’ dresses represented a lot of today’s style, yet very refined without the benefit of using fabric to express that richness,” says Charlene Parsons, chair of the fashion department, at Miami International University of Art & Design.

The dozen finalists along with the three winning designs will be showcased at the end of the month in Miami International University of Art & Design’s gallery in a fashion exhibit.
