The US$520 million smelter and refinery complex, owned by Thai Copper Industries Public Co., Ltd., is located in Rayong, Thailand. Aker Kvaerner is completing the project under a $115 million lump sum EPC contract begun in December 2002.

The current contract follows a project suspension of nearly five years due to the Asian economic crisis. Aker Kvaerner designed the facility and had achieved 68% completion at the time of suspension. Aker Kvaerner's strong HSE mindset and formal safety programs and procedures, combined with cultural and language sensibilities and staunch commitment by the site management team, have contributed to the project's safety achievement.

"Since the project's inception in 1995, Aker Kvaerner and Thai Copper Industries have had an excellent working relationship and together are building a modern, environmentally responsible addition to Thailand's infrastructure. Safety is our number one priority, and we are very pleased that the project has achieved this important milestone," said Jim McGrath, President of Aker Kvaerner's global metals business unit.
