Aker Kvaerner awarded subsea contract for world record breaking installation to increase oil recovery

"This technology has enormous potential for the Gulf of Mexico and West of Africa - the installation of these pumps will extend the production lifetime of the field and increase the ultimate oil recovery for the operator," says Raymond Carlsen, Executive Vice President Aker Kvaerner Subsea.

The contract comprises delivery of two complete subsea pump stations of the twin screw type, plus one spare pump to be installed at BP's King field in the Gulf of Mexico in 2007. The engineering, procurement and construction contract will include modules with manifolds, variable speed drives, topside and subsea control systems, topside lube oil hydraulic power unit and high voltage connectors and jumpers.

The subsea pumping system will be located in the King field complex, which ties in to the Marlin tension leg platform in the Gulf of Mexico. King is an oil field located approximately 29 kilometers away from the Marlin TLP in water depths ranging from 1500 meters to 1700 meters.

The pump station system will be manufactured at Aker Kvaerner Subsea's facility in Tranby, Norway.

"We were selected for this contract based on technology we have been developing since 1998, with the support of the Norwegian government's 'Demo 2000 program' and major oil companies - it has the potential to enhance production from new developments and producing fields worldwide, in both shallow and deepwater applications," concluded Carlsen.
