The scope of work, to be executed from the firm's Stockton office, comprises engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of FED (Fuel Element Debris) Waste Retrieval Equipment. Structural modifications and installation of equipment will be carried out to enable the removal, sorting and transfer of nuclear FED from the plant's active waste vaults.

Mark Leggett, President of AK Engineering Services, said, "Our in-house technical expertise and experience in the nuclear sector together with our HSE performance on similar projects were key factors in us being awarded this important contract. We are also delighted to be continuing our long-standing relationship with British Nuclear Group Project Services on this new assignment."  This is the second project of its kind to be secured by the firm in the last three years.

The project approach is based on the use of a waste retrieval and sorting philosophy as previously utilised by AK Engineering Services on similar projects. "The approach is safety-driven and cost-effective, providing the client with a value for money solution," added Alan Ainsley, AK Engineering Services Project Manager. The project is scheduled for completion by end 2005.
