Aker Solutions' nuclear decommissioning project for Magnox North recognised for construction excellence

29 April 2009 - Aker Solutions is involved in the first of the UK's major nuclear decommissioning projects to be accepted into the Demonstration Project programme administered by Constructing Excellence Wales - a cross industry body for improving construction in the UK. Located in North Wales at the Trawsfynydd Decommissioning Site, the project is known as the Trawsfynydd Strategic Integrated Framework (TSIF). This is the first time that a nuclear industry project has entered the Demonstration Project programme.

Magnox North selected Aker Solutions in 2006 as a framework partner to undertake works at the Trawsfynydd Decommissioning Site. The TSIF project was established under a procurement model that was designed to promote innovation and performance improvements in what is a relatively traditional industry. After initially being awarded a three year contract in 2006, Aker Solutions has now had this contract extended by a further year with the potential for further extensions if the current excellent performance is maintained.

The Demonstration Project programme is structured to stimulate excellence in construction project delivery, through the application of best practice and innovation by means of collaborative working within a long term relationship. Aker Solutions is partnering with three other major contractors to undertake the works and through this partnership arrangement is demonstrating the benefits of collaborative working in the nuclear industry.

The five key principles on which the success of the TSIF projects is based are committed leadership, customer focus, team and process integration, a quality driven agenda and a commitment to people.

"The importance of the application of these principles has been fundamental to the success of the project and has the potential to influence the design of future delivery models across the whole of the nuclear industry," said Dave Ley, president and managing director of Aker Solutions' E&C business.

Aker Solutions' work involves the clean up of the nuclear wastes that resulted from 30 years of nuclear power generation at the site. Scope includes the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of facilities that retrieve and safely package the nuclear waste and to then finally de-contaminate the associated facilities.  This work is being performed via the delivery of a programme of interrelated projects which, at peak, comprised of twelve decommissioning projects, with a total value to date of around NOK 460 million.
