Aker Solutions successfully completes major gas fired power project for TransCanada in North America

Report this content

22 November, 2010 - Aker Solutions' subsidiary Aker Construction Canada Ltd, with its joint venture partner, Burns & McDonnell Canada Ltd, has successfully completed the engineering, procurement and construction of the Halton Hills Generating Facility for TransCanada Energy Ltd. (TransCanada).

Located in Ontario, Canada, this generating facility is part of the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) initiative to help meet the critical energy and stability needs of the southwest greater Toronto area. The station provides reliability to support Ontario's growing renewable energy electricity production from wind and solar, whilst contributing towards replacing coal-fired power generation.

The 684 Megawatt 2x1 Combined Cycle natural gas fired plant was built on an 80 acre green field site in Halton Hills and created approximately 800 construction jobs. Aker Solutions' subsidiary, Aker Construction Canada Ltd., performed construction, construction management, portions of procurement and commissioning support for the project. Burns & McDonnell Canada Ltd. completed project design, procured engineered equipment, provided technical assistance for construction and executed the commissioning and startup of the facility. The joint venture project team mobilised in October 2007.

TransCanada is a leader in the responsible development and reliable operation of North American energy infrastructure including natural gas and oil pipelines, power generation and gas storage facilities. TransCanada's network of wholly owned natural gas pipelines extends more than 60,000 kilometres (37,000 miles), tapping into virtually all major gas supply basins in North America. TransCanada is one of the continent's largest providers of gas storage and related services with approximately 380 billion cubic feet of storage capacity. A growing independent power producer, TransCanada owns, or has interests in, over 10,800 megawatts of power generation in Canada and the United States.

Burns & McDonnell is an international employee-owned architectural, engineering and consulting firm based in Kansas City, Kansas USA.

The Aker Solutions contract party is Aker Construction Canada Ltd.
