Barrick Gold awards contract for Cowal project to Aker Kvaerner

Managing Director of Barrick Gold of Australia, Stephen Orr, said, "we are pleased to engage Aker Kvaerner on Cowal's project construction.  The Cowal Gold mine represents a significant new investment for Barrick in Australia and it is expected to make an important contribution to Barrick's growing production profile."

Cowal contains approximately 2.5 million ounces of proven and probable reserves and is expected to produce on average between 220,000-235,000 ounces of gold per annum. Production is targeted to commence in early 2006.
