Maritime Pusnes contract for Arctic Crane Offloading System

Report this content
The arctic crane offloading system is a new concept developed by Maritime Pusnes and sub-supplier Hydramarine, who will supply the actual cranes. The system enables offloading of crude oil from the platform over to a shuttle tanker.

The contracted system consists of two stations located diagonally apart at two corners of the platform. Two loading stations permit loading from the best direction with respect to ice, wind and current. As part of the system, a releasable hawser handling winch both stores the mooring line and deploys it over to the shuttle tanker for tandem mooring. The crane then transports the offloading hose over to the shuttle tanker where it is connected to a receiving coupler.

The system includes various safety features such as emergency stop of pumps, crane overload protection, failsafe winch brakes, manual emergency override etc. All these features ensure safe human operation and avoidance of accidental pollution of the environment.

"The award of this important contract proves Maritime Pusnes' competitiveness within new arctic offloading concepts and ability to find and work with compatible sub-suppliers", says Leif Haukom, President of Maritime Pusnes. He continues that "The contract represents a breakthrough in an interesting market and success here will serve as a future reference for similar projects".

The platform consists of a steel-caisson foundation, which has been under construction at the Sevmash military shipyard for more than a decade, and the topsides of the Hutton tension-leg platform bought by Rosneft in 2002. The platform will be situated in the Prirazlomnoye oil field south of Novaya Zemlya in Northern Russia. The field opened in 1989 and lies 60 kilometres from mainland Russia. It is located in the Pechora Sea at a water depth of approximately 20 metres.

Since the end of the 1980s, the Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering (CDB ME) "Rubin" has carried out design of platforms for development of the Prirazlomnoye oil field and the Shtokmanovskoe gas condensate field. The initial customer for this work was ZAO Rosshelf and from the beginning of 2002 - ZAO "Sevmorneftegas".

The license for the field, which has oil reserves of 610 million barrels, is held by Sevmorneftegaz . This is a 50:50 joint venture between Rosneft and Gazprom created in 2001 to speed up development of the Prirazlomnoye field. Maritime Pusnes' interest and work with the project dates back 10 years ago.

Most of the equipment will be manufactured in Poland and Norway.
