Important appraisals completed at Johan Sverdrup
Statoil has as operator completed important appraisal wells in the western part of the Johan Sverdrup field. This also marks the completion of the appraisal program in the central parts of the field.
This is the tenth, and the eleventh well in the 265 license. The tenth well, 16/2-17S is an appraisal well, bordering the field’s main western boundary fault. Well 16/2-17B is a sidetrack, drilled in the Cliffhanger south prospect.
Ready for decision on development concept
The appraisal well encountered an 82 meter gross oil column in Jurassic sandstones, the upper 39 meters with a very high reservoir quality. A formation test were carried out in this section, and showed exceptional flow properties. With a 40/64-inch choke, the well produced almost 6,000 barrels per day at a maximum.
Vice President Asset Johan Sverdrup in Det norske, Odd Ragnar Heum, is very pleased with the latest results at the field,
-The appraisal well removes any uncertainty related to the fields’ extension along the western fault. The fact that the reservoir shows the same exceptional qualities is very positive. We are happy to have completed the appraisal program in the central part of the field, and are now ready to place the field centre and start working on the development concept.
Not giving up on Cliffhanger
The main target of the sidetrack well in the Cliffhanger south prospect was to explore Jurassic sandstones at the Utsira High, west of Johan Sverdrup. The well did not encounter sandstones in this section. The well is therefore classified as a dry well. In the granitic basement, oil shows were found, but this section was dense.
- We still have expectations for the area west of Sverdrup. Cliffhanger north is being drilled this August, says Odd Ragnar Heum.
