Yesterday, Aker Carbon Capture and Norcem HeidelbergCement celebrated another milestone for the Brevik CCS project, as the companies formally signed a series of contracts for delivery of the worlds first carbon capture plant at a cement factory.

"The collaboration between HeidelbergCement and Aker Carbon Capture dates back to 2011, when we took the first steps on this journey together," said Per Brevik, Director Sustainability at Norcem HeidelbergCement, who has been a driving force behind the project from the outset.

Signing the contract is a key milestone in this project

"The Norwegian government has proposed taking the Brevik project forward, together with the Northern Lights full transport and storage chain. The two companies believe the decision in Parliament will follow that recommendation so the project can start up in early 2021. Signing the contracts with Aker Carbon Capture represents a key milestone in this project and we are now one step closer to delivering on our commitments", said Giv K. Brantenberg, General Manager HeidelbergCement Northern Europe.

The Brevik project will add significant value for other CCS projects across Europe

"The knowledge-transfer from building the Brevik CCS plant is significant. Aker Carbon Capture uses the same technology in this plant as other plants that we are bidding for in Europe and around the world," said Valborg Lundegaard, Chief Executive Officer in Aker Carbon Capture who together with Chief Commercial Officer Jon Christopher Knudsen and Chief Projects Officer Erik Langholm attended the ceremony.

"The delivery of carbon capture, liquification and storage at the Norcem cement factory in Brevik opens a climate solution for the entire cement industry. We are delighted with the faith HeidelbergCement Norcem have shown in us in this landmark project," Lundegaard added.
