April 29, 2026 – Aker Solutions AS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rolls-Royce SMR Ltd within the small modular reactor (SMR) market. The MoU establishes a partnership to develop Aker Solutions’ offering of non-nuclear parts of framed modules for Rolls-Royce SMR’s portfolio, leveraging Aker Solutions’ deep expertise in modularization and complex energy project execution.

“This partnership represents a key opportunity to enter a potential new market for Aker Solutions, building on our extensive experience in executing large and complex energy projects.  Our proven capabilities in onshore facility development and modular construction position us well to contribute to the SMR value chain,” said Kjetel Digre, Chief Executive Officer of Aker Solutions.

SMRs are compact nuclear reactors built offsite and installed onsite, offering advantages in scalability, cost-efficiency, and deployment speed compared to traditional reactors. SMRs can balance intermittent wind and solar power, ensuring grid stability. The cooperation between Aker Solutions and Rolls-Royce SMR aligns with Europe’s push for stable, reliable energy and supports the broader energy transition.

As part of the MoU, Aker Solutions will work closely with Rolls Royce SMR to develop the design and scope, supporting discussions towards a long-term strategic relationship for modularization and related capabilities across customer projects in the UK and other countries. This includes alignment on design, project execution models, procurement strategies and exchange of competences. The initial focus will be on developments in the United Kingdom and Czech Republic, underscoring the growing momentum of the SMR technology in these markets.

“As Europe accelerates its energy transition, SMRs are emerging as a key technology to meet growing energy demands while reducing carbon emissions. Rolls-Royce SMR’s selection of Aker Solutions for this partnership demonstrates how we are leveraging decades of oil and gas experience to unlock new opportunities in emerging energy markets, reinforcing Aker Solutions’ role in the broader energy transition,” said Digre.
