First order for batteries for hybrid construction machinery

Alelion Energy Systems AB (publ) has received an order from Huddig for high-voltage batteries for construction machinery. The order which is the first in serial production, amounts to MSEK 1 and will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The battery manufacturer Alelion and Huddig, leading manufacturer of construction machinery, are now seeing the results of a multi-annual cooperation to develop a hybrid model of Huddig’s backhoe loader TIGON.

The powertrain of the hybrid backhoe loader combines a combustion engine with several electrical motors powered by a lithium-ion battery.

“Demand for hybrid machinery in construction is projected to grow strongly in order to minimize emissions and noise, in particular in sensitive surroundings and urban environments,” says Lars Lindahl, CEO of Huddig.

In tandem, Huddig and Alelion have developed solutions that meet a particularly demanding specification that requires a high power output in a harsh environment. The battery can supply a continuous current of 900 A due, in part, to a sophisticated climate system including both electric heating and liquid cooling/heating.

“We have developed novel technology and new methods to handle such high currents. This power level requires the use of special battery cells and implies stricter requirements on the connections and wiring,” says Leif Eriksson, Global Key Account Manager at Alelion.

The demanding development effort has been conducted in close cooperation between the companies’ specialists in mechanics, electricity and electronics, systems engineering, and software.

“We have appreciated the close and challenging cooperation with a technically skilled customer that was able to benefit from our battery-technology expertise,” says Åsa Nordström, CEO of Alelion Energy Systems.

The first version of the battery prototype was installed in Huddig's machinery in spring 2020, and worked from day one. A further developed version of the battery is currently being tested in a realistic setting.

Alelion broadened its business in 2020 to cover several niche segments in special vehicles, which has created conditions for growth and higher profitability.

“We are now well equipped to assist special vehicle manufacturers who lack the required in-house resources to develop and produce battery solutions. We are thereby enabling our customers’ transition to electrified vehicles,” says Åsa Nordström.
